RUBS

Ratio Utility Billing System: Tenant FAQ

How shared water bills are calculated at SNSHN—and what to expect for timing, proration, and your monthly budget.

What is RUBS?

RUBS stands for Ratio Utility Billing System. It splits a shared utility bill among residents using a pre-set formula.

When does RUBS apply?

  • Multifamily

One city water meter for the whole property. SNSHN divides the bill among occupied units.

  • Single-family

Single-family residents pay their own full water bill directly.

How does SNSHN calculate RUBS?

We use bedroom count across occupied units, not headcount.

Your charge = (Bedrooms in your unit ÷ Total bedrooms in all occupied units) × Total building water bill

Worked Example

Duplex. Total water bill $200.

Unit / ResidentBedroomsShareAmount
Unit A (Kevin)33/5$120.00
Unit B (Karen)22/5$80.00
Total5—$200.00

Budget tip: Water is billed quarterly. A cycle covering March → June may post in late July and is due with August rent.

Billing Cadence & Timing

  • •Quarterly billing.
  • •Lagged posting from usage to charge.
  • •Posting: Charge is added to the resident account and due with the next rent after posting.

Moving In or Out

Mid-cycle move-ins/outs are prorated.

Leaks & Unusual Usage

SNSHN monitors for spikes that indicate leaks. Report issues immediately.
